On Wednesday, May 2, UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill, and former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar were joined by welterweight Randy Brown, flyweight Erin Blanchfield, and New Jersey Devils mascot NJ Devil as they visited the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, as part of UFC 288: STERLING vs. CEJUDO fight week.
“The Boys and Girls Club of Newark were thrilled to host UFC and its stars this week,” said BGCN Chief Executive Officer Ameer Washington. “They did an amazing job sharing their personal experiences and providing our members with words of encouragement to help motivate them to work hard and follow their dreams. Thank you!”
The Boys and Girls Club of Newark provides hundreds of children in Newark with a safe space to learn to make positive life choices, establish healthy habits, and develop academic skills.
“We had a lot of fun spending time with the kids here today,” said Edgar. “The club is a great organization, and they do a lot for the local youth here in New Jersey. I was born and raised here, and these clubs serve as a place where kids can join programs to help with their academic studies, mental and health and wellness, and their overall fitness. I’m glad we were able to do this.”
“It was great to come here and give back to these kids today,” remarked Hill. “I grew up in a similar club back in Michigan and places like this mean a lot to kids who are searching for a better life. Places like this provide inspiration and these kids need to know that they can overcome any obstacles as long as they work hard and don’t quit.”
At the conclusion of the event, the UFC Foundation made a $10,000 donation in recognition of the organization’s 30th anniversary.
The funds donated from the UFC Foundation will go towards the non-profit STEM Educational Institute, which offers high school students the opportunity to learn the technological skills needed to enter today’s workforce and aims to serve as a diverse talent pipeline for organizations throughout the state of New Jersey.
